Your Questions Answered
Am I eligible for transport support?
Yes. You may be eligible for transport support if your disability prevents you from using public transport safely or independently. Eligibility is generally based on your mobility needs, safety considerations, and your requirement to attend essential activities such as medical appointments, education, work, or community participation. An assessment of your daily support needs will help determine the level of assistance you can access.
How much transport funding will I receive?
Transport funding varies depending on your individual circumstances and level of participation in the community. The NDIS typically provides different support levels, ranging from basic access for essential travel to higher funding for participants who work, study, or engage in community activities regularly (e.g., 15+ hours per week). Your planner will determine the appropriate level based on your goals and needs.
How is transport funding paid or accessed?
Transport funding is usually provided as a Core Support and is paid directly into your nominated bank account on a regular basis (often fortnightly or monthly). In some cases, it may be managed through your plan manager or the NDIS portal, allowing you to claim eligible transport-related expenses as needed.
Can I use my transport funding for taxis or rideshare services?
Yes. You can use your transport funding for taxis, rideshare services like Uber, or accessible community transport if you are unable to travel independently. These trips should be linked to your NDIS goals, and it is important to keep receipts or trip records as evidence of how the funding is used.
Can I use my funding to pay a family member for transport?
No. NDIS transport funding cannot be used to pay family members or informal carers for driving you to appointments or activities. The funding is intended for formal transport services or approved providers that support your independence and participation in the community.
Can a support worker assist me with travel?
Yes. If a support worker accompanies you or helps you before and after a trip, their time can be funded under your Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation budget. Additional travel-related costs such as parking or tolls may also be included if agreed upon in your service arrangement.
Can transport funding be used for vehicle modifications?
Yes, in some cases. If it is deemed reasonable and necessary, NDIS funding may support vehicle modifications such as wheelchair hoists, adapted seating, or other accessibility improvements. These modifications must be directly related to your disability needs and approved within your plan to improve safety and independence.
