Your Questions Answered
What is Support Coordination?
Support Coordination is an NDIS-funded service designed to help participants understand and implement their NDIS plans. A Support Coordinator works with you to connect with suitable service providers, build your confidence in managing supports, overcome barriers, and help you achieve your goals. The aim is to increase your independence and ability to navigate the NDIS over time.
Am I eligible for Support Coordination?
Eligibility for Support Coordination is determined within your NDIS plan. If the NDIA identifies that you would benefit from extra help to manage and coordinate your supports, funding for Support Coordination will be included. This funding is specifically allocated to assist you in navigating the NDIS, accessing services, and achieving the goals outlined in your plan.
Do I automatically get Support Coordination in my NDIS plan?
No. Support Coordination is not automatically included in every NDIS plan. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) only funds Support Coordination when it is considered reasonable and necessary for a participant. This may be approved if you need assistance navigating complex support systems, managing multiple providers, or during significant life changes and transitions.
Can I change my Support Coordinator if I am not happy?
Yes. You have choice and control over your NDIS supports. If you are not satisfied with your current Support Coordinator, you can change providers at any time. You do not need to wait until your plan ends. Finding a coordinator who understands your needs, goals, and preferences is important for achieving positive outcomes.
Does my Support Coordinator need to be located in my local area?
No, your Support Coordinator does not have to live in your local area. However, working with a local coordinator can be beneficial because they often have strong relationships with local service providers, community organisations, and support networks. Their local knowledge can help you access suitable services more efficiently.
Can my Support Coordinator help me prepare for my NDIS Plan Review?
Yes. Support Coordinators can assist you in preparing for your plan review by gathering evidence, documenting your progress, identifying unmet needs, and preparing reports. They can also help outline recommendations for future funding and supports to ensure your next plan reflects your current circumstances and goals.
What can a Support Coordinator help me with?
A Support Coordinator can help you:
- Understand your NDIS plan and funding.
- Find and connect with suitable service providers.
- Coordinate multiple supports and services.
- Build skills to manage your own supports.
- Access community programs and resources.
- Resolve service delivery issues.
- Prepare for plan reviews.
- Work towards achieving your NDIS goals.
- Navigate changes and life transitions.
How do I get started with a Support Coordinator?
If you already have Support Coordination funding in your NDIS plan, you can contact us and arrange an initial meeting to discuss your needs and goals.
If you do not currently have Support Coordination funding but believe you need it, you can discuss this during your next plan review, speak with your Local Area Coordinator (LAC), or provide evidence showing why Support Coordination would help you effectively implement your plan.
