Your Questions Answered
What is the difference between a Support Coordinator and a Specialist Support Coordinator?
While both roles assist participants in implementing their NDIS plans, a standard Support Coordinator focuses on building your capacity to understand and connect with services. Specialist Support Coordination (Level 3) is designed for participants with highly complex needs or unstable situations. It involves advanced expertise to manage risk, coordinate multiple services, address systemic barriers, and support crisis situations through a multidisciplinary approach.
Who is eligible for Specialist Support Coordination?
You may be eligible if your NDIS plan includes funding for Level 3 Specialist Support Coordination. This is generally provided to participants experiencing complex or high-risk circumstances such as homelessness, significant mental health challenges, complex medical conditions, or involvement with multiple systems like justice, health, or child protection services.
What qualifications do Specialist Support Coordinators have?
Specialist Support Coordinators are typically required by the NDIA to hold relevant tertiary Allied Health qualifications and be registered with their professional governing body (such as AHPRA). They also have extensive experience working with complex cases and multidisciplinary systems.
Can a Specialist Support Coordinator approve or change my plan?
No. A Specialist Support Coordinator cannot approve funding or make official changes to your NDIS plan. However, they can support you by preparing detailed reports, gathering evidence, and making informed recommendations for plan reviews or reassessments.
How is SSC funded in my NDIS plan?
Specialist Support Coordination is funded under the Capacity Building budget of your NDIS plan. The level of funding allocated depends on your individual circumstances and is determined by the NDIA as reasonable and necessary support.
What happens if I am not happy with my Specialist Support Coordinator?
You have full choice and control over your supports. If you are not satisfied, you can change providers at any time, subject to the notice period outlined in your service agreement.
How does Specialist Support Coordination help during a crisis?
In crisis situations, a Specialist Support Coordinator works quickly to stabilise risks, implement immediate safety plans, and connect you with urgent services. They also coordinate with relevant agencies to ensure your safety and ongoing support needs are addressed.
How long do I need Specialist Support Coordination?
The duration varies depending on your situation. It is usually provided as a short to medium-term support aimed at stabilising your circumstances. Once risks reduce and supports are in place, you may transition to a lower level of coordination or more independent management.
