Your Questions Answered
What is the difference between Respite and a Holiday?
Respite care is a funded support service designed specifically to support people with disabilities and provide temporary relief for their carers. It is focused on meeting disability-related support needs in a safe and structured environment. Unlike a holiday, respite cannot be used for general leisure travel, tourism, or family vacations such as flights, cruises, or entertainment activities that are not linked to support needs.
How much respite am I allowed?
Under the NDIS, participants are generally funded for up to 28 days of Short-Term Respite per year, depending on individual needs and circumstances. This can be used flexibly, such as longer block stays, weekend breaks, or occasional overnight care. The goal is to ensure both participants and carers receive the right level of support and rest throughout the year.
What does respite funding cover?
Respite funding is designed to cover the full cost of short-term support. This typically includes safe accommodation, assistance from support workers, personal care such as showering and grooming, meal preparation and nutrition, and support with daily activities. It may also include access to community participation, social activities, and life skills development depending on individual goals.
Which budget does respite come from?
Respite care is funded through your NDIS Core Supports budget, specifically under the category of Assistance with Daily Living. This funding is flexible and can be used to access short-term accommodation and support when needed, based on your plan and approved supports.
Can I choose where I stay and who supports me?
Yes, participants often have choice and control over where they receive respite care and who provides their support. Depending on availability, you may choose between shared or private accommodation, and some providers also offer in-home respite services where support workers come to you. The aim is to ensure comfort, familiarity, and a good match with your support needs.
Can respite be used in an emergency?
Short-Term Respite is not designed as a long-term solution for housing emergencies such as homelessness or sudden loss of accommodation. However, if your regular carers are suddenly unable to provide support, respite can be arranged as a short-term option to ensure you continue receiving safe and appropriate disability-related care while longer-term solutions are explored.
Can I request more respite if my needs change?
Yes. If your circumstances change—such as increased support needs, carer burnout, or changes in your daily living situation—you can request a review of your NDIS plan. During the review, you may be able to adjust or increase your respite funding to better reflect your current needs and ensure ongoing support for both you and your carers.
