Your Questions Answered
What does NDIS personal care support include?
Personal care support covers a range of daily living activities such as hygiene and grooming (bathing, showering, oral care, hair care), toileting and continence support, meal assistance, mobility help, and medication reminders or assistance with administration where required.
Who can provide my personal care support?
You have choice and control over who provides your care. You can use registered providers or, if you are plan-managed or self-managed, you may also engage unregistered support workers. In limited and exceptional cases, family members may be approved by the NDIA.
Can I choose the gender of my support worker?
Personal care is flexible and can be delivered in your home, a family home, or within the community. It can also be provided while you are at work, attending education, participating in social activities, or travelling.
Where can personal care support be provided?
Personal care support can be provided in a range of settings, depending on your NDIS goals, needs, and preferences. This may include support in your own home, supported accommodation, community settings, during social and recreational activities, while travelling, attending appointments, education, or employment.
NDIS-funded personal care is designed to help participants maintain their independence, dignity, health, and wellbeing wherever assistance is required to carry out daily living activities safely and comfortably.
What is not covered by NDIS personal care?
The NDIS does not fund everyday living expenses such as rent, groceries, or utilities. It also does not cover services already funded through other systems like health or education, or any illegal or non-registered services.
How do I get or change personal care funding in my plan?
If you don’t currently have personal care funding, you can request a plan reassessment or discuss your needs with your Support Coordinator or Local Area Coordinator. Evidence of your support needs may be required.
